Hamstring injury

What is a hamstring injury?

The hamstrings are a group of muscles at the back of the thigh that work hard during sprinting, kicking and sudden acceleration. A strain or tear happens when the muscle is pushed beyond its capacity, often during high-speed running. Injuries range from mild strains to more significant tears, and some involve the tendon. An accurate assessment of the type and location of the injury shapes the whole rehab plan.

How we work

How we assess and treat a hamstring injury

  1. 01

Thorough initial assessment. Injury history, movement analysis and biomechanical screening to identify the root cause, not just the symptoms.

  2. 02

A personalised plan. Your plan is built around your injury, your sport and your next game or race, not a generic sheet of exercises.

  3. 03

Hands-on treatment where it helps. Soft tissue release, joint mobilisation and sport-specific techniques.

  4. 04

Progressive, evidence-based rehabilitation. Graded loading that rebuilds strength, stability and sport-specific movement patterns and high speed running.

  5. 05

Objective return-to-sport testing. We use VALD technology so you and your physio know where you stand at each step in the process.

Hamstring FAQs

Book an Appointment
Do I need a referral to see a physio for my hamstring?

No. Book directly online or by phone.

Will I need a scan?

Not always. Your physio will assess you and advise whether imaging is worthwhile. If a medical opinion is needed, our sports doctors are part of the team.

How long until I can play again?

It depends on the severity and location of the injury and the demands of your sport. Your physio will set milestones at your first consultation, and objective testing guides each step.

Can I claim on private health?

Yes. Physiotherapy is covered under Extras with most funds, subject to your limits, and we have HICAPS for on-the-spot claims.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing that allows access to the back of your thigh, such as shorts.
